Stairs? Yea, They’re Lovely… Until You Have To Design Them
I’m a classic stair avoider. Always have been. I much prefer the lift, but the sight of a well constructed, visually pleasing and elegant staircase will always catch my eye.
Hand Rendering v Computer Generated
Hand rendering v computer generated. This debate can bring out all sorts of passionate views about the personality, character and charm that a skilled hand drawn render can provide. Then we have the other side of the coin… the evil and nasty world of computer generated visuals. ‘They are cold’! And void of individual quirks’, I hear you shout! But are they?!
‘It’s Got Great Form…’
“It’s got great form…”, is something we hear people in the ‘industry’ saying all the time. And it’s said with clarity, conviction and confidence. But I’m going to be honest: I had to Google its definition in design terms because I just couldn’t get my head around it.
A World Without Creativity?
I’m deeply concerned, disappointed and angered by recent news coverage discussing Government proposals to exclude Arts subjects from the UK education system for the under 16s. This post is void of any creative element. Intentionally.
Shelton, Mindel & Associates Part II
A report illustrating Shelton, Mindel & Associates’ utilisation of the 7 elements of Interior Design. I thought my readers might find this brief insight both interesting and informative.
Let’s Talk About Chippendale…
I’m not a fan of ‘traditional’ styling in general BUT (and this is a BIG ‘but’) I do respect traditional craftsmanship. This has surprised me somewhat. I always thought I was a modern and contemporary gal. But nope, I’ve been proven wrong.
Lace? On Walls? Yes!
This design concept is for an Office space in a Grade II listed building that is located in the Lace Market of Nottingham. I’ve considered the use of lace but in quite a low-key manner, as it would be way too obvious to include lace furnishings.
Modern + Vintage = Individuality
We all know that including objects within a design scheme can personalise a space; underpin a design theme; pick out accent colours, and provide much needed visual stimulation, texture and depth.
Use of Colour – Old Skool Style
Boards, boards and more boards. An essential visual communication tool in interior design but it’s oh so difficult to keep churning out new and interesting ways to illustrate your message.
Shelton, Mindel & Associates = Perfection
Never mind the impressive and wide-ranging portfolio that Shelton, Mindel & Associates’ design firm (NYC) boasts; their window displays are pretty mind blowing too. When you strip back the pioneers of the creative and design industry you are left with individuals that embrace a certain level of escapism and the creative freedom to truly express themselves. This […]
The Georgian Era – Back By Popular Demand!
I’ve noticed (from having a nosy at my site stats) that a lot of people are using Google to search for the history of Georgian design. I already have a post relating to a Georgian colour scheme but my very first module while studying my interior design Diploma required me to look into the history of Georgian […]
John Pawson Revisited – A Lesson in Lighting
I’ve engaged in debate with my fellow interior design students regarding the minimalist interiors/style of the acclaimed John Pawson and in particular the bathroom entitled ‘Pawson House 1994’. Opinion was very divided as to the aesthetic appeal of this bathroom and its minimal, very simplified design. I had suggested that part of the reason why […]
A Round of Applause for GIMP
Having sampled the delights of GIMP for over a year now, I’ve decided to dedicate a post to this life-saving, wondrous, user-friendly and FREE (can you believe that?!!) image editing software.
Think Outside The Box
Presentation is paramount in the world of design, and in Interior Design presentation boards are a vital communication tool.
I’m A Fan of Space But This Is Ridiculous
So, I’ve heard a lot of noise about this John Pawson fellow. An Architect and Interior Designer, he is a devotee of simplicity and embracing a feeling of space. But that’s all this is, SPACE!
The Most Unique Leather Sofa I Have EVER Seen!
When I visited The MAC art gallery in Belfast, I came across a pretty special and unique sofa that simply begged to be photographed!
Historical Scheme
For this historical colour scheme I have taken inspiration from the Georgian era and used a colour palette of powder blue, soft chalky white and an earthy stone colour.
REduce. REuse. UPcycle.
REduce. REuse. UPcycle: the upcycling trend appears to have finally gathered momentum within the interior design field. This creative and innovative process promotes the use of more unique, statement pieces within interior design.
